SPOTLIGHT ON
THE GONZO APPROACH
BY ERICA HERNÁNDEZ
Movies have always been my way of finding doors into other places, a window to a world far beyond my own. Growing up, driving to Blockbuster and renting a few movies for the weekend was about as exciting as things got in Flint, Michigan. Films like Out of Sight, Jackie Brown, Heat and even the occasional “what the fuck did I just watch” like 2001: A Space Odyssey were on constant rotation.
I think these experiences from my childhood organically find their way into my approach as a photographer and director. For example, I recently photographed Juliana Aiden Martinez (of Griselda) and my inspiration for the shoot came via my love of Neo-noir / old Hollywood. Martinez's new show on Netflix has a lot of suspense and action so I wanted to find a way to blend that with my obsession for the film All About Eve.

INSPIRATION
I'm also really inspired by writers and artists like Hunter S. Thompson, Ralph Steadman and Elmore Leonard. In high school I picked up Hunter S. Thompson’s Rum Diaries for the first time read:
“Like most others, I was a seeker, a mover, a malcontent, and at times a stupid hell-raiser. I was never idle long enough to do much thinking, but I felt somehow that some of us were making real progress, that we had taken an honest road, and that the best of us would inevitably make it over the top. At the same time, I shared a dark suspicion that the life we were leading was a lost cause, that we were all actors, kidding ourselves along on a senseless odyssey. It was the tension between these two poles—a restless idealism on one hand and a sense of impending doom on the other—that kept me going.”
I remember reading this and thinking to myself that I had never felt someone so specifically articulate exactly how I felt (then and still now). This tension between idealism and doom is something I relate to very deeply. Exploring mixed media and the varying aesthetic approaches I bring to set is my way of bottling up that tension and making something meaningful out of it. Sometimes it can go dark and gritty and other times it feels bright and playful.
